Your answer is: Big Lots. Apparently the super discount store wants a fresh new space and a little more room to breathe…and they’ll pick that up this fall when their new replacement store is ready for action. Store management recently confirmed that Big Lots will be moving lock, stock, and broom handles to newly remodeled space alongside the new Burlington store across the parking lot from Applebee’s Restaurant . November 2 nd is the projected completion date for the re-location plan. The existing store, on M-139 in Benton Harbor, was becoming difficult to maintain due to the aging infrastructure of the space, and their desire to increase the size of their footprint in the market. The current store will remain in busi-ness until the final moment when the shift is made in early November. A few blocks away from the current Big Lots, it’s just about big deal time for the crew at Overflow Church. Work on their new sanctu-ary at 300 East Napier Avenue is nearing com-pletion and the church will officially move their worship services out of the Celebration Cinema theater where they have held court for the past four years. Founded in 2007 with a mission “to reach the un-churched and de-churched in our world,” Overflow Church will finally have a permanent home in a building that was previ-ously home to another congregation. Lead Pastor Brian Bennett says that he is very much looking forward to settling into their new church at the corner of Napier & Broadway , calling it a perfect location to continue to share Christ’s love in our community as a church for all people. The Grand Opening of the new building will take place with services at 9:31am and 11:31am on the morning of August 19 th . Their new property also has plenty of room for expansion, including a project for a 500-seat auditorium when the need arises for it. The new site will, naturally, also serve as offices for the church which previ-ously had conducted business in the former Sears building in the Orchards Mall. Also on the move is Tom Ives and his Cellular Choices mobile phone shop. Tom recently vacated space on State Street in downtown St. Joseph in favor of new digs inside Armco Ink & Toner in Southtown St. Joseph. The new address for Cellular Choices is 2942 Niles Avenue in Southtown, alongside Rumors Hair Salon just south of Lambrecht’s Liquors. The newest showcase in the Van’s family is situated inside the brand new Lakeland Medical Suites building in Niles across from Lakeland Community Hospital. They have a 1,500 square foot retail store on the main floor there offering their full line of home medical equipment and supplies. They are open for business Monday through Friday from 8:30am until 5pm. Congratulations to Van’s!

Now open for business in the Paw Paw Lake neighborhood is the new Night Owl Designs. Under the watchful hand of owner Suzette Newman, Night Owl is a bead store located at 190 North Paw Paw Street in downtown Coloma. Suzette told me recently that she had wanted to own her own art store since she was in grade school. While the shop is primarily a bead store, she will also be selling artwork created by local artisans, some of her own art and other art works on consignment. She should certainly know her business, inasmuch as she worked for Just-Bead-It in downtown St. Joseph for more than four years. The new shop is open seven days a week. Incidentally, the Night Owl name stems from the many nights that she would work well into the night on her creations once her children were asleep for the night.

Speaking of art…you need to get Saturday, August 18th on your personal calendar if you love both the art of nature and the works of our friends at Water Street Glassworks in the Benton Harbor Arts District. On that Saturday night, the Weirich family of Benton Harbor will swing open the gates onto a spectacular garden party being called Twilight in the Garden. Ronald & Barbara Weirich own amazing space high atop the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, and are generously opening their Lake Cliff Gardens to this colorful fundraiser benefitting the Glassworks. Round Barn Winery will provide liquid refreshments and Timothy’s will provide various cuisines in each of the themed gardens on the private lot. The event begins at 6pm with silent auctions and raffles to follow amid the garden tours and on site dinner. Jenna Mammina will also headline several performances that evening. All of the glass sculptures in the gardens that evening will be available for purchase. Tickets are $100 each and are available by calling the Glassworks at 925-5555. Proceeds will benefit the Fired Up After School Program, tabbed as one of the Top 50 in the nation by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Also on the garden tour scene is the upcoming Deer Path Gardens and Sarrett Nature Center’s Butterfly House and Gardens Tour. That event is next week on Sunday, August 5th from 1 until 5pm rain or shine. Deer Path Gardens is an enchanted private setting nestled around the home of Glenn & Margaret Poole near Point O’ Woods Golf & Country Club. The home is located at 4224 Pinewood Drive in Benton Harbor. Sarrett Nature Center’s Butterfly House, ponds, native plant garden and more are located at 2300 Benton Center Road in Benton Harbor. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be split between The History Center at Courthouse Square and the Sarrett Nature Center. For advance tickets call 471-1202 or 927-4832.

Arts and crafts lovers have a superb showcase and a great excuse to sample the award winning wines of Domaine Berrien Cellars today, Saturday the 28th when they host their 8th Annual Art, Wine, and Music Festival right in the center of the vineyards. Showtime today runs from 11am until 7pm rain or shine, and 25 artists and craftsmen will be selling their handcrafted work under their individual tents. There’s a unique line up as always from hand-woven baskets to jewelry, wood carvings, watercolors, photography and more.
