I don’t know if they operate on a fiscal year or just have a certain date that they conclude their count for promotional pur-poses, but they appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America program recently and listed the most sought after people and subjects of the entire year. Thanks to a now famous resident, our community scored a solid position in the Top 5 on that list. Kate Upton…supermodel daughter of St. Joe’s Jeff & Shelley Upton…was surpassed by only three other people or subjects in the grand tally for the entire year of 2012. Moody On The Market

Here’s an interesting little sidebar in your holiday season that you might very well have missed in the hustle and bustle of your shopping sprees, Christmas parties, and everything else commanding our attention as we draw closer to the end of the year. The online search team at Yahoo! Recently unveiled their Top Searches on Yahoo for 2012. I don’t know if they operate on a fiscal year or just have a certain date that they conclude their count for promotional purposes, but they appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America program recently and listed the most sought after people and subjects of the entire year. Eager searchers made the 2012 Presidential Election the most sought after information…followed closely by the iPhone 5. The only human being with more searches on Yahoo! Was Kim Kardashian. Kate finished in 4th place on the list, even beating out another famous Kate in the form of Kate Middleton, the Royal Duchess of Cambridge. Not bad, Kate! Congratulations on your fame and fortune.

Kate’s also-famous uncle, Fred Upton, was recently honored for his work in support of American manufacturers. The National Association of Manufacturers presented our Congressman with the NAM Award for Manufacturing Legislative Excellence. He has always been a champion of U.S. manufacturing and is deserving of the award.

Folks routinely headed to Berrien Springs to venture onto the St. Joseph Valley Parkway have been asking me what the sizable new building is that’s going up at the junction of M-139 and the Parkway. My friends at CPM Construction in St. Joseph are the general contractors for a spacious new home for the Lake Union Conference of Seventh Day Adventists. Until last summer, the Lake Union Conference had occupied a building on the campus of Andrews University a short distance to the south of the new construction site on the opposite side of M-139. That building, however, was sold to Andrews University last year to accommodate the acquisition by Andrews of Griggs University & International Academy which was moved to the space occupied by Lake Union. Don Livesay is the president of Lake Union and he had previously told us that their building was far larger than necessary for the conference to carry out the necessary functions of their organization. When they sold the building to Andrews they launched a search of the Berrien Springs area to find a site suitable for a new headquarters building. Both Lake Union and Griggs have shared the space on the Andews campus pending the construction of their New space. That construction is now well underway at the junction, directly across from the offices of Dr. Todd Christy and his Berrien Dental clinic atop the hill just north of the by-pass.

Meanwhile, construction is not only complete… but the ribbon has been cut on the new Tyler Honda dealership along Red Arrow Highway in Lincoln Charter Township. The new 20,000 square foot full-service dealership was completed by Pearson Construction Company of Benton Harbor, using the design team from TERA Architects. Owned and operated by Chris Tyler, the sparkling new dealership is a new flagship in the region for more than four decades of auto business ownership in Berrien County. The original company was founded in December of 1969 as a Chevrolet dealership by Tim Tyler and his partner Terry Linville. Over the years, as products evolved, the Tyler family has at various times represented more than 18 automotive nameplates from Cadillac to Kia. Thanks to an incredibly strong reputation for outstanding customer service, the Tyler team has enjoyed a stable workforce with low turnover on the sales and service sides of the house. You’ll find the new Tyler Honda beautifully situated at 4356 Red Arrow Highway in Stevensville. Congratulations, Chris…lookin’ great!

On the same evening of the Tyler ribbon cutting, Sean Todman and his associates were busy showcasing the brand spanking new Renaissance Athletic Club on Graham Avenue in Benton Harbor. That world-class, state-of-the-art center officially swings open the doors to the public on Monday (12/17) and will be the subject of many a jaw-dropping “wow” response. Featuring strength, personal and professional training as well as cardio and group fitness classes, the club has a spectacular back drop in the form of the first and second holes of the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Club at Harbor Shores. The center is between the new public access water launch on the Paw Paw River and the clubhouse itself at Harbor Shores. The club will also feature top-of-the-line equipment and training programs that allow you to experience running in the Alps or biking in the Grand Canyon, and a soundproof yoga studio. Also showcased to potential members during the open house were the modern locker rooms with keyless wood lockers, multiple lounges, spa services, steam room and sauna. On-site child care services and a comfortable café round out the experience. The 23,000 square foot all-purpose fitness facility welcomes members far and wide.

The Heritage Chapel of Starks Family Funeral Homes has opened for business in Berrien Springs under the management of licensed funeral director Jason Storm. The Chapel is located at 8747 US-31 (M-139) in the building that formerly housed the Legacy Funeral Home. Owned and operated by Tom Starks, the building has been updated, including wireless internet access for guests, an audio loop system providing clearer sound for visitors with hearing aids, and other improvements. Storm is a lifelong resident of Michigan’s Great Southwest who has more than 9-years of service in the Starks family business. The Heritage Chapel marks the fifth location for Starks, who also owns funeral homes in St. Joseph, Dowagiac, New Buffalo and Buchanan.

The crew at The Hair Cuttery has reached the end of the line in their short-lived existence along M-139 in Benton Charter Township. The styling salon on the periphery of the Fairplain Plaza concluded business at that site during the first week of December in the strip center that also houses Batteries Plus and Game Stop.

Cycle-Re-Cycle of Benton Harbor has captured the spirit of Christmas! They’re delighted to be a part of the New Territory Arts Association’s Art Hop coming next Friday, the 21st to the Benton Harbor Arts District. The Cycle-Re-Cycle crew will open up shop early at 5pm to host Green Drinks for Michigan’s Great Southwest Sustainable Business Forum. The Art Hop itself runs from 6 until 9pm that night. At Cycle-Re- Cycle they will feature rideable art both on display and for sale. Lots of bikes and good cheer. Be sure to check their up-cycled lighted tree handcrafted from bike rims and holiday ornaments made from bike chains and such. There will be music, light bites and lots of libations and gifts as they take a night of celebration to thank their incredible volunteers. Cycle-Re-Cycle is a non-profit community bike shop where volunteers accept donated bikes, renew them and offer them back into the community at affordable prices. You’ll find them across the lot from Mosaic Resale Shop on the opposite side of Main Street from Michigan Works!

Meanwhile, the Art Hop becomes a Holiday Hop and will offer everyone a sneak peek of the new location for Lark’s Bar-B-Q and Car Wash at 174 W. Main Street. Also on the docket is a grand party at Anna Russo Sieber’s ARS Gallery with holiday style small bites and refreshments as you scan the works of Floyd Gompf and Linda Hoffhines among others. Other stops in the district include Water Street Glass and Gelato Works, the OutCenter, Tabor Hill Tasting Room, The Livery Micro-brewery, the Ideal Place, Charlie’s Piggin’ n Grinnin’ and The Library. Lots of fun for everyone…next Friday night, the 21st.

They’ve just wrapped up operations on the 7th Annual Suitcases for Kids fundraiser conducted by the Southwestern Michigan Association of Realtors. The annual program benefits foster children in Berrien, Cass and Van Buren Counties. The Realtors and affiliate members this year raised more than $1230 in cash and collected numerous new backpacks and duffle bags. Additionally, Christ Lutheran Church in Stevensville became a new champion for the program this year raising money for Berrien County Foster Care through their rummage sale. They donated 10% of their profits to the group, resulting in a donation of $900, which was then matched by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans bringing the total to $1,800.00. Also aiding the cause was the group from Berrien Towne & Country Quilters who have been partners for the past three years now. They donated hand-made quilts to the foster children. Nice work!

Their smiling again this winter at Edward Jones following word that the firm with offices scattered throughout southwest Michigan have been ranked first for the 18th time in REP Magazine’s annual survey of the nation’s six largest financial services firms. Charles Stein, an Edward Jones Financial Advisor in the Bridgman office tells me that the magazine randomly selects financial advisors nationwide and asks them to rank their firms in a variety of categories, with EJ scoring 9.3 out of a possible 10 points nationwide. Congratulations!

Also garnering nationwide magazine recognition recently are Ken & Julie Wuerfel of the Mosquito Squad. An article titled Picking the Right Partners – in Life and in Business cited the St. Joe couple for making sure that one another’s skill set is unique and different from your partner’s as a key to success. They are quoted as encouraging others to know one another’s strengths and then utilize them. “Let your partner excel and don’t second guess their strength.” The article appears online at the website for the 1851 Franchise Project.

Chocolate Lovers…if you’re looking for a unique holiday gift for a friend, family member, employee or even yourself…Lory’s Place will still take orders for their amazing Heart-to-Heart Chocolate Pizzas through this coming Wednesday the 19th. You can order 5-inch pizzas for a donation of $5 or 13-inchers for $25.00. Call by the close of business on December 19th at 269-983-2707, and proceeds go to Lory’s Place, a Grief Healing and Education Center of Hospice at Home.

Finally today…an invitation for you to attend a Holiday Open House at the Historic McNeil House at 603 State Street in St. Joseph. Today, Saturday, December 15th from 1 until 4pm Jennifer Davis from Rent By the Beach wants to show you what her controversial home really looks like and offer up some treats, house tours, horse drawn carriage rides if the weather permits, and performances by Professional Magician Rob Mendell. The home has been targeted repeatedly by opponents of short-term rentals in St. Joseph, and Jennifer wants neighbors, city residents or anyone interested to come and see what the house is really like first hand. Check it out…and arrive at your own conclusions.

That’s a wrap on this week’s edition of Moody on the Market…thanks for reading, thanks for shopping locally this holiday season and always…and we’ll see you again Saturday right here in MailMax!

Pat Moody

Executive Vice President of Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce pmoody@cornerstonechamber.com 269-925-6100 ext. 216
