Moody On The Market

Pat Moody

For those of you who are returning to Michigan’s Great Southwest following a long-anticipated Spring Break escape, Welcome Home! For those who have been here on the home front all along…I hope your “getaway” from the routine was equally as rewarding. For all of us there’s great news in the Lakeshore neighborhood. If you’ve accumulated an inordinate degree of dust, dirt and detritus from your road-trip or even just your ramblings around town, the Wash Station on Cleveland Avenue across from Lakeshore High School is back in operation and under new ownership. Well, at least the self-serve bays are back in service. John Curtis and his son Mark are now the proprietors of the recently shuttered car wash. Most folks in the neighborhood will likely recognize the Curtis name and its association with quality vehicle care. John is the longtime owner and operator of Lakeshore Petroleum which is the corporate name for both Lakeshore Shell on Red Arrow Highway and Napier Shell at Napier & I-94. What a lot of folks might not realize is that about a year ago, John and Mark acquired the carwash operation on Cleveland Avenue just off the intersection with Hawthorne in St. Joseph Charter Township as well. A new 40,000 square foot facility being built there will house up to 100 new employees. That’s exactly what happened to Janet Keefer Lagness recently as she was making plans for the upcoming season at Eden Springs Park in Benton Charter Township. On March 13th the phone rang and Janet was talking to the National Amusement Park Historical Association in Lombard, Illinois. Heritage Fund Coordinator Bonnie Bonczyk told Janet that her park had been selected for a grant of $750.00 to “help with the continued operation of your special park.” Apparently several members of the national association had nominated Eden Springs for the award and they will put the money to good use for security fencing. He’s got a couple of new colleagues helping set the stage for the new season, too. Smith has been appointed as the new General Manager and Director of Golf for Harbor Shores, where previously he was the Director of Golf. New to Ross’ team are Brianne Schmidke, Director of Sales & Communications, and Lisa Morris, the new Food & Beverage Manager for Harbor Shores. Ross has more than 30-years of experience in the golf industry, and is pretty excited about his new team and the upcoming golf season. Meanwhile, as prep work continues on the grounds of the golf course, The Grille at Harbor Shores is open for the year serving lunch from Monday through Saturday and dinner every Thursday through Saturday until the golf season begins, at which time they will be open daily for both meals.

As the weather gets nicer with every passing week, the crew at Greenbush Brewing Company in Sawyer has released its spring and summer seasonal beer, Sunspot. The wheat beer is now available at restaurants and bars carrying the Greenbush line and in bottles at craft beer retailers across Michigan. Sunspot is a German-style Hefeweizen, full-bodied, unfiltered wheat beer with a crisp, light sweetness and distinct banana and clove aroma. Look for a Sunspot Release Party at The Buck Burgers & Brew in St. Joseph beginning at 5pm on April 15th. A little tax time relief from Ken Kozminski’s team.

The men and women of Lest We Forget would like to get onto your calendar for their 6th Annual Tribute to Veterans. This version is set for May 17th through the 19th at the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport, featuring many returning popular segments and some new additions. Look for World War II battles at the airport, a Vietnam re-enactment featuring Huey helicopters, vehicles and the 25th Infantry “Wolfhounds,” along with tributes to the Korean veterans. A full and detailed listing of the myriad events getting underway on Friday the 17th can be found online www.lestweforgetusa.org. Look for a grand array of American flags lining both sides of the road leading into the airport for several weeks prior to the event weekend.

For the third year running, the folks at the Starks Funeral Homes will sponsor a health and wellness event for funeral home associates and their families. Tom Starks, who is president of the corporation, says that at the beginning of every year, Lakeland Regional Medical Center operates a health awareness station at the Starks & Menchinger Funeral Home to create a personal health profile for each employee and spouse willing to participate. This year’s theme of the coordinated effort is “The Walk to the Island,” and features 54 employees in eight teams who will perform sufficient hours of aerobic exercise to travel the distance from St. Joe to the Mackinac Bridge and back. That’s a total of 642 miles. They launched the effort in mid-May and will conclude on May 31st with each team’s progress tracked on a large map in the office of the funeral home. Every mile walked by the players earns a contribution to “Relay for Life” in support of Breast Cancer Awareness in memory of Tom’s wife Tracey who succumbed to breast cancer in 2004 at the age of 42.

Speaking of Lakeland, it looks like management at Lakeland has been listening to associates, as well. Thanks to that input at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, the Atrium Café inside the hospital along the river now features a much more nutritious menu with a dramatically increased offering of healthy items. Apparently, annual surveys have resulted in requests for healthier items, and the menu has been upgraded in return. New to the Atrium menu now are such offerings as avocados, banana peppers, black beans, broccoli salad, diced chicken, ham and turkey, dried cranberries, feta cheese, fruit salad, green salad, green olives and green peppers, mandarin oranges, onions and spring lettuce mix. The café unveiled its new array of more healthy choices last month, doubled the salad bar, and witnessed more than double the sales in healthy items. The Atrium Café is open to the general public as well, so check it out when you’re in for tests or to visit friends or family being cared for.

Congratulations are also in order once again for Lakeland Continuing Care where they have earned Five Stars in the “Overall Rating” by Medicare every month for the past three years running now. Ratings are compiled based on data from health inspections, quality measures, and staffing. Lakeland Continuing Care has the highest rating for any facility within a 30-miles radius according to Medicare.

Rich Lester is a mentor for CWTech, a local robotics team representing students from Coloma, Watervliet, Eau Claire, Michigan Lutheran, Lake Michigan Catholic, and Grace Christian schools. Having ranked in the top 1% of robotic teams in the world (!) They are qualified to go to the state finals, and are looking for additional sponsors to help pay their way to St. Louis. Currently they have support from Edgewater Automation, M-Tec, and Walsworth Publishing. These kids have logged long hours dating back to January, meeting at M-Tec every day Monday through Saturday working weeknights from 4:30 until 8 or later and all day Saturday.
