The more than half-a-mil-lion square foot enclosed mall erected at 1800 Pipestone in Benton Charter Township in October of 1979 is now officially listed as for sale by owners Sequoia Investments of Eureka, California . The mall was built on the site of a long time apple orchard, thus the matching name for the center just off of I-94 at the Pipestone interchange. Over the years the mall has thrived in its hey-day and it has sustained considerable attrition as leases expired and merchants large and small left the fold. Now, the more than 528,000 square foot mall and its 60-acre site are on the block but bear no set asking price. It is listed by the Farbman Group based in Southfield, Michigan , a full service real estate firm. William Bubniak , who just last month was pro-moted from Senior Vice President to Executive Vice President at Farbman specializes in the sale of invest-ment and turnaround properties and the structuring of sales of buildings for users and buyers to purchase their own businesses. He has been assigned the task of sell-ing the mall for Sequoia Investments. In a prepared statement regarding the sale, Bubniak says, “Farbman Group is committed to finding the right entrepreneur or developer who recognizes the value of this center and has the energy and vision to take the Orchards Mall to the next level.” When the mall opened it came in with a huge splash featuring three anchors in the form of J.C. Penney, Sears and Walgreens . Walgreens departed the center for free-standing options decades ago, and in 2009 Sears lost their lease which was actually owned by a different owner than the rest of the mall. A Sears Hometown Store returned to the center in recent years and continues to be a draw for the mall. Elder-Beerman arrived on the scene building onto the mall in the fall of 1992 on the heels of a major makeover for much of the interior of the center. Elder-Beerman was eventually acquired by Carson’s which still anchors that end of the Mall. Attrition was taking its toll as early as 2000, when the mall was running an occupancy rate of roughly half its capacity, around 50-percent occu-pied, but got several solid bursts of energy with the heralded arrivals of Bath & Body Works around 2005 and later in the decade the takeover of the long vacant Walgreens space by Jo Ann Fabrics , which just under-went a major makeover itself last year. Michael Winford is a retail enthusiast who has tracked the suc-cess and failures at the mall for years and he distinctly recalls a large variety of stores that have come and gone over the years including the likes of: The Gap, County Seat, The Hang Up, Baker Shoes, Fox Jewelers, Carlton Cards, Glamour Shots, Card America, Hallmark, Chess King, Kinney Shoes, Famous Footwear, So Fro Fabrics, Jean Nicole, Lerner New York, Banner Books, Foot Locker, Spencer’s Gifts, Recordtown, Camelot Records, FYE, Imperial Sports, Hickory Farms, KayBee Toys, Gordon’s Jewelers, The Original Cookie Company, Sherman’s Ice Cream, Afterthoughts, Command Performance, Regis Hair Sytles, Candy Candy, Foxmoore, Richman’s, Gem Dandy Jewelers, Casual Corner, Shoe Sensation, Factory Brand Shoes, Thom McAn Shoes, The Buckle, Radio Shack, The Great Steak & saddle 2 for $ of The 999 98 T he fate 699 98 Orchards Risa Club Chair 34.5w 31.5d 33.5h. The business is still owned and operated by Jackie, but her daughter Christine Andrews is now a partner in the operation, headquartered in a non-descript, ages old, metal building at 6230 Jericho Road.Following the trends of current day pottery studios, the Purple Giraffe has evolved into a contemporary studio with the opportunity of offering traditional ways of a bygone era. At the Purple Giraffe, customers can show up and start with a “ready-to-paint” piece or stop by and “clean the greenware” and then proceed after it is fired.Over the course of the years, Christine tells me that mother and daughter have discovered that they thoroughly enjoy the opportunities afforded by creativity in the business, and they equally love to see what their customers are willing to do with their own creativity. The real fun can come in pottery parties as they play host to bridal parties, birthday parties, girls/couples/men’s nights out, office parties, school groups, BoyGirl Scout outings, home-schooled groups, and beyond all of which are welcomed at any time. If anyone wants to come in to paint pottery, the Purple Giraffe Pottery Studio welcomes them and can provide the room to explore your creativity. They have even been known to take the studio “on the road” for special occasions. The studio on Jericho is just a mile from downtown Stevensville, under the Stevensville water tower. The phone number there is 269-605-3662 or 269-428-3513. You can track the studio on Facebook as well. Summer hours at the Purple Giraffe are Monday and Wednesday from 9am until noon, and Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30am until 1:30pm. If no one is painting one hour before closing, the studio closes early. Evening classes meet Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 7pm until 10pm.Afternoon hours, Fridays and weekends are for appointments and special groups. Christine says thanks to the family-owned nature of the business, they have the ability to accommodate nearly any situation for customers, and customer service is always the most important to them.

If, as the old saying goes, “I scream...You scream... We ALL scream for Ice Cream,” the screaming is just days away in Michigan’s Great Southwest. The Child & Family Services Auxiliary of St. Joseph will be wielding the ice cream scoops on what everyone hopes will be a fine summer day for the 46th consecutive year in conjunction with the Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff. The Child & Family Services Auxiliary Ice Cream Social arrives on the Whitcomb Veranda in downtown St. Joseph on Art Fair Saturday, July 12th from 10am until 4pm. In addition to freshly-scooped ice cream, visitors will find freshly baked cakes and pies on hand. Tickets are just $4-each and will be available that day. All proceeds from the Ice Cream Social, a regular fixture and the Auxiliary’s major fundraiser since 1968, will go directly to help support the programs of Child & Family Services of SW Michigan, Inc. That unit serves children, the elderly, and families in Southwest Michigan through these programs: Safe Shelter -- for domestic violence… The Link Crisis Intervention Center -- for at risk youth…Harbor House & Autumn House -- offering respite day services for adults…West Michigan Guardianship -- managing personal affairs for the elderly…Homecare Services -- for the elderly and physically challenged. Last year the team at Child & Family Services served more than 2,832 individuals in Berrien, Cass and Van Buren Counties through those agencies. For nearly 100 years, since 1915, the Auxiliary has been dedicated advocates for those in need. They are grateful to Whirlpool Corporation for their assistance in underwriting this venture, as well as the myriad businesses and individuals who continue to support the Ice Cream Social with their generous donations.

That’s it for this week folks.
