He was bringing his Signature Automotive Group to an area hard hit by recession, but he was also bringing a great deal of pride in community to the table when he signed the papers to take on the Toyota brand. Now, 25 years later, Moon was recently greeted by a powerhouse crew of top regional Toyota executives including Regional General Manager for Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Scott Wracher and awarded a soaring plexiglass star trophy citing his quarter century of service to not only the market here, but also the entire Cincinnati region comprising 121 dealers in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Wracher says the region is “Proud of the partnership created here, and proud to recognize Gene Moon for his exemplary service to Toyota.” Moon opened the doors on the original Signature Toyota on January 15, 1989, and readily admits that his first two years were rough. After being recognized by his corporate team today with not only the 25-year recognition award but the dealership’s 5th President’s Award, Moon said, “This means we’ve withstood a lot of stuff!” He quickly added, that he is “Proud of our (the dealership’s) contributions to the community.” He cited good people, working hard for many years and promised, “We’re here for the long run.” He has a primary focus of passion for the ongoing improvements of the Benton Harbor community and points with pride to ongoing efforts to raise up the Benton Harbor Area Schools, pledging his continued assistance to get the job done. Gene told reporters, “Business in Benton Harbor is picking up, and we’ve seen tremendous changes for the good over the years.” He was a Buick-Pontiac dealer in Paw Paw when Toyota approached him about establishing a presence here. He says, “It sounded like a pretty good opportunity, and I figured, I’m in the transportation business, and the world has certainly adopted Toyota,” so he gave it a whirl, and has been spinning sales ever since. After awarding Moon with the 25 year recognition, his partner Bill Crowder gathered the entire staff for a group photo in recognition of their 5th Toyota President’s Award. That type of performance is almost unparalleled considering the rigorous criteria necessary to earn such recognition. The President’s Award is reserved for a small handful of dealerships who achieve a high grade mix of customer satisfaction, sales performance, and overall excellence in every aspect of the property. Only five Toyota dealers in the entire state of Michigan were successful over the past year in achieving that honor. Signature Automotive Group sits on more than 3 acres of property at the corner of Napier & Union Avenues in Benton Charter Township, sporting the Toyota brand side by side with Hyundai, Scion and Mitsubishi automobiles at 680 E. Napier Avenue.

If you’re going to open up a new business in a small town, there’s no better time to do so than just days before the entire community turns out for the annual festival and parades right past your front door. That’s the sort of timing that can generate tons of new leads, and that’s exactly what veteran hairdresser Laura Zielke capitalized on. Laura has opened up shop in the heart of downtown Eau Claire, at the corner of Main & Elm Streets, just down the block from the Village Hall. Her new Village Salon is located at 6597 E. Main Street in Eau Claire, and she opened for business on July 1st. That was just days ahead of the community’s 29th Annual Cherry Festival, and its colorful parade which passed right in front of the salon. While Laura’s business is new to Eau Claire, she brings years of experience to the community having operated the former 1st Street Salon in downtown Baroda several years ago. Her family later moved to Eau Claire and now Laura is back in business and welcoming new clients and customers at her shop. Village Salon is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am until 7pm, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am until 4pm and Saturday’s by appointment only. The shop is closed Sundays and Mondays. You can reach Village Salon and Laura Zielke at 269-461-6161.

Imagine crafting a masterpiece worthy of hanging on the walls of some of the hippest, coolest art museums in the region but with a “shelf-life” of days at best, perhaps only hours or minutes depending on the vagaries of Mother Nature. Oh, and the entire time that you are crafting this masterpiece, you are on your hands and knees, doubled over hot asphalt with people of all ages weaving in and out amongst the “canvases” of you and your fellow artists. While your creation may be fleeting in its realm, you will be a superstar among the masses who visit slack-jawed, awestruck, and fascinated by your work for all to see. Thus is the life of a sidewalk or street artist working with pastel chalks to manufacture incredible and colorful imagery for the 13th Annual Chalk the Block Festival in downtown St. Joseph. The big event is this weekend and it’s all a part of a great mid-summer “boredom buster” as the crew at St. Joseph Today describes it. It’s a great opportunity before the siren song of the back-to-school crunch and it is a decided crowd pleaser year after year. The Chalk the Block Festival, which also features great sidewalk sales among the merchants of downtown St. Joseph, began July 31st and runs through tomorrow. It’s sponsored by the Cook Nuclear Plant -- Indiana Michigan Power, and is free to spectators. The Sidewalk Sale days run the full length of the festival. In the middle of the festival you will also find Heritage Walking Tours, Horse Drawn Trolley Rides, a Friday night concert, the weekly Farmers Market, Summer Movies in the Park, the Antiques on the Bluff monthly session, and the weekend Municipal Band Concerts. Regional artists will create their asphalt canvases beginning today, Saturday (8/2) at 7am until Sunday at 10am. The chalking takes place on Broad Street between Lake Boulevard and State Street. A great sidebar event is tonight’s (8/2) Y-Country Summer Jam at the Shadowland Pavilion at Silver Beach featuring Parmalee.
