ECRWSS Local Postal Customer Paper. News Good our Y November 22, 2014 POSTMASTER: Please deliver on November 22, 2014 Moody on The Market www.MailMaxOnline.com T he bold corporate col-ors of the forthcoming Buffalo Wild Wings restau-rant in Southtown St. Joseph have been applied to the new building underway on Niles Avenue , and signage for the building has been approved, but the target for completion is still up in the air for now. Indiana developer Mike Jones is still sorting out various issues regarding contractors for the finish work on the interior of the building, but the shell is nearing completion by crews from Pearson Construction Company in Benton Harbor . Most of the new restaurant’s exterior work is done, according to Burt Pearson, Jr., and he says they will likely be done with their part of the contract yet this month. Pearson won the bid for the 5,000 square foot shell of the eagerly antici-pated restaurant and sports bar, but Jones reserved the interior finish work and design to a separate contract. Jones said recently that upcoming meet-ings will let the entire team working on the proj-ect craft a more defined schedule for the build-ing’s completion. The restaurant was already held up for several weeks in the beginning due to backlogged orders in the U.S. steel industry which held up delivery of the building’s structur-al steel. Pearson quickly got that framework in place and has been working on the balance of the exterior work ever since, including the concrete pad for an outdoor patio, and another concrete pad outside the footprint of the restaurant for the large refrigerated coolers to be installed. The 190-seat restaurant gained St. Joseph Planning Commission approval for sign variances, because they are larger than the city’s guidelines. However, the signs will be on the exterior of the building, and there will be no ground-based sign at the site according to plans submitted. Jones was reluctant to even pin a range on the potential completion date when I talked with him, saying there were simply too many variables still up in the air until consultations with design teams, contractors, and other assorted vendors could be conducted. The vagaries and uncertainties of the construction process are certainly nothing new to Jones, inasmuch as he already owns and operate 30 Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants in six states from Virginia to Alaska. His only other property in Michigan is in the city of Coldwater, but Jones owns restaurants in his home state of Indiana as well as in Virginia, Illinois, Ohio and even one in Anchorage, Alaska. His restaurants in Indiana include the Buffalo Wild Wings in his home town of LaPorte as well as stores in Michigan City and Portage . The restaurant will hire some 50 to 55 full and part-time employees when the project is closer to completion. Montgomery and his wife Tawn are partners with Tawn’s mother in the new 221 Main Restaurant & Cocktail House. That’s the place formerly known as Players Bar & Grille. Montgomery changed the name as the first step in crafting a more refined brand to go with the excellence his culinary team strives for in a talented kitchen daily. The switchover occurred last week after tons of work. Over the past several months the conversion to 221 Main has cost “well into six figures,” according to Montgomery, but he absolutely loves the end result. The place never closed down for a minute during the renovation which produced an entirely new roof, relocation of the rooftop air-conditioning units to pave the way for a future roof-top dining experience, new porcelain flooring, demolition of the old canopy that wrapped around the building, re-painting of the entire building from top to bottom, new awnings over the windows and exit door, new signage and lights, total reconstruction of the bay window on the second floor over the entrance to the restaurant, and more. Inside, new kitchen equipment has been installed to better accommodate the new menu, which, by the way, is now leather-bound. All new staff uniforms are now employed and while the original menu retained some of the local favorites, Montgomery has added more steaks, appetizer boards of cured meats & cheeses, creme brulee for dessert and more. The evolution of 221 Main is ongoing, and Robert tells me that by the beginning of next month the main bar will be revamped with an initial offering of over 120 different whiskeys from the world over. Plans then are to continue to add to those offerings each month with the eventual goal of hitting 500 by the time the rooftop expansion occurs in a couple of years. He’s reasonably reasonably certain that those plans will provide them with the largest whiskey selection in all of Michigan’s Great Southwest. Playing out the whiskey niche, Montgomery will be introducing “Whiskey Boards,” wherein customers can sample different whiskeys, scotches, bourbons and ryes in order to “truly enhance the whiskey experience.” Finally, 221 Main will begin featuring a Cocktail-of-the-Month, starting with their Barrel-Aged Cocktail Program which has the crew barrel-aging their own cocktails in house. The massive makeover for 221 Main continues at, naturally, 221 Main Street in downtown St. Joseph alongside the St. Joseph Post Office. The restaurant is open for business seven days a week and can be reached by phone at 982-4000. For those who have become accustomed to enjoying their favorite collegiate and pro sports coverage on the myriad flat screens, they are still bringing you all the big games, but in a nicely upgraded atmosphere with some dynamic food pairings from their busy kitchen. Before you step through the door, Robert Piner and his crew at Revolution Design hope you’ll take a moment to admire their handiwork in creating the large, stellar new 3-dimensional, halo-channel, lighted 221 Main sign prominently displayed on the front of the building. It’s a work of art. Piner’s team also crafted the new interior signs as well.

When Loretta Holmes was born, her teenaged birth mother left her at an orphanage in a delicate white basket with a pink bonnet on her tiny head. That was just the first of many challenges and struggles this dynamic woman has faced in her life. Her adopted mother contracted a terminal illness and died when she was four. In the long run, she not only beat the odds, but went on to earn top ranks in Aquabike competitions coming in 1st in Michigan, 2nd in the Midwest and 13th nationally. Earlier this year, I shared with you Loretta’s story when she created Elizabeth Coaching, focused on training athletes in cycling and the Aquabike. Not only has that venture far exceeded her expectations, now she has taken the plunge with a partner for the next level of the dream through creation of a unique and cutting edge cycling studio. Introducing: Elizabeth Coaching Cycling Studio in St. Joseph Charter Township. Teamed in partnership with co-owner Thom Figueroa, Loretta’s new studio, located at 3664 Niles Avenue in the same building as Sunset Coast Golf Center, is a cutting edge facility utilizing the dynamic new Wahoo Fitness Kickr Trainers. That system is the world’s first iPhone powered bike trainer, wherein cyclists and triathletes can monitor their own performance and track their heart rate, calories burned, and power in wattage, with the option of displaying their results on a 70-inch screen, adding to the fun and competitive class dynamic. The Wahoo Kickr trainers will transmit a rider’s output, calories burned, miles biked, and other data to their email and their Training Peaks account after each class. Loretta Says the goal is to create a nurturing community where everyone can share the gift of cycling and fitness, regardless of age, limitations, or athletic ability, and more importantly, inspire fellow athletes to ride their dreams as they pedal ambition, sweat passion, and believe in their power. Figueroa is an Age Group Triathlete who started his journey in 2009 when he was told by his doctor that he needed to lose 20 pounds and get his blood pressure and cholesterol under control. He began the journey by purchasing his first bike. He soon discovered the word of triathlons and suffered several trials and tribulations but gained momentum eventually but lost some wind in his sails when his father died two years ago. When Whirlpool gave him the opportunity to go to the Human Performance Institute in Orlando to become a Certified Corporate Athlete Course Facilitator it was life-changing, and now he’s eager to help new and experienced endurance athletes through a minimalist training methodology to become their best and reach their goals. He says, “Wahoo Kickr’s will provide two awesome benefits for cyclists and triathletes that can’t be found anywhere else,” adding, “a Cyclist or Triathlete can come into the studio and ride hills and mountains that just are not available within our community and through interval based workouts they can get huge improvements in their cycling performance that is safer and more effective than riding outdoors.” The new Elizabeth Coaching Cycling Studio offers virtual structured workouts via iPhone or Android, and athletes will have the opportunity to ride any Ironman course at the studio. Your first class is free at the studio, and class passes for anywhere from 1 to 10 classes are available along with 2 and 3 hour journey rides and personal coaching by the hour. Class sign-ups are now being taken by clicking this link, or you can call for more information at 269-944-9843. Or, at the very least, a little more frequent. In anticipation of its busiest travel week of the year, Amtrak is adding 18 more trains to its schedule to operate between Michigan destinations and Chicago, including out of the St. Joseph Train Depot below the bluff, during the Thanksgiving holiday season. You are encouraged to book soon to assure your inclusion before the trains sell out. Extra trains will run on the Pere Marquette line linking Chicago and Grand Rapids through St. Joseph, Bangor and Holland. Additionally, more frequencies are being added to the Amtrak Wolverine Service and the Blue Water line. All are trains sponsored by the Michigan Department of Transportation. Michigan passengers will also find sparkling new train stations in both Grand Rapids and Troy this holiday season. In essence, to accommodate the expected surge of holiday travelers nationwide, America’s Railroad will operate every available passenger rail car in its fleet and is scheduling extra trains and adding capacity on several routes. The busiest travel days of the Thanksgiving week are the Tuesday and Wednesday before the holiday and the Sunday after Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Shop Small Business Saturday. Other than Thanksgiving Day, morning trains typically have more available seats than those in the afternoon and evening. In FY 2014, nearly 31 million passengers traveled on Amtrak on more than 300 daily trains -- at speeds up to 150 mph -- that connect 46 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian Provinces.

Are you tired of the same old sugar cookies?
