As an advocate for that, I thank you. Orchards Mall shoppers will have a few additional opportunities to spend their money here in town thanks to the annual influx of seasonal kiosks and shops that typically crop up for holiday buyers. Moody on The Market

As the Thanksgiving holiday fades into memory, and retail activity continues to spike across the region, we can all be thankful that our area continues to be buffered from the worst of the economic storms, and local businesses continue to enjoy a reasonably healthy spirit during this critical time of year for their industry. The massive turnout of local shoppers for Black Friday sales were testimony to the willingness of customers to not only get into the spirit early, but also keep their dollars local as often as possible. As an advocate for that, I thank you.

Orchards Mall shoppers will have a few additional opportunities to spend their money here in town thanks to the annual influx of seasonal kiosks and shops that typically crop up for holiday buyers. Body Magic Power has established a presence near Elder- Beerman, with representatives on hand every Thursday through Saturday from now until January 2nd, offering Ardyss International products such as re-shaping garments, nutritional and health care products. Up until Christmas Eve, Texas Corral, which has a steak house on the perimeter of the mall has a special kiosk inside the mall for the sale of gift cards and novelty items. JWP Coffee has opened up shop near Off the Edge, featuring Organo Gold Coffee gift sets. They will be in the house every Thursday through Saturday until Christmas Eve. Two new operations have set up year-round operations near theMall’s Food Court. They are S&G Variety and Touch Wireless USA. S&G offers sunglasses, body jewelry and related items including gold overlay, gold filled and sterling jewelry.

They will be open 7-days a week throughout the year. Touch Wireless USA offers cell phone accessories and repair, jewelry, belt buckles and Boost Mobile cellular packages. They also will be open 7-days a week throughout the year. Additionally,Amicarelli’s Restaurant will be offering the sale of gift cards near JoAnn Fabrics each weekend through December. On a final note, the Berrien County Historical Society has established an exhibit featuring historical war stories across from the Food Court. That display will remain intact through January 9th of

2010. Also, for the record, I had forgotten that the Bublick family no longer held an interest in the Man Alive stores. They had sold the chain about five years ago to The Finish Line, Inc., who subsequently sold the chain to another company earlier this year. They are the ones who are returning the Man Alive to the Orchards Mall soon, not the Bublick’s according to Dan Bublick who sent me a gracious note on the matter.

In downtown St. Joseph, State Street Antiques has relocated to a new shop of comparable size across the street from their former location. Owner Linda Sprague tells me that her new operation is at 417 State Street next door to the new Cedar Closet. Her winter hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday from 11am until 5pm, Saturdays from 10 until 5 and Sundays from noon until 4pm.

She completed the move just about a month ago from the Elks Building at 410 State Street.

How about a nice round of applause for Keller Williams Realty of Southwest Michigan and their joint venture partners as they celebrate their 10th Anniversary with an “Attitude of Deep Gratitude.” Their recent garage sale/fundraiser for the local food bank, Feeding America of Southwest Michigan, raised $5,000.00 through sales and generous donations. A donation of that size is easily extrapolated into the purchase of from $40 to $50-thousand dollars worth of food to be distributed throughout the tri-county region, thanks to their buying power. The agents and staff at Keller Williams donated many hours to the success of the event, and their joint venture partners of Coastline Title, Lighthouse Lake Financial, Home Protection One, TA Roberts Home Inspectors, Bob Burkett from Visions Construction and Brent Hawks from Visual Effects all provided generous contributions of time and money. Additionally, Penske, Whirlpool, Lakeland Healthcare and other tenants of their buildings stopped by to do some shopping helping out the cause. Nice work, guys! That’s truly the holiday spirit.

They didn’t announce the date until it was too late for my deadline, but assuming everything went as scheduled last night…the good folks of the City of St. Joseph and the St. Joseph Improvement Association have flipped the switch to Light Up the Bluff. The spectacular winter wonderland light display from Ship Street south to Park Street will light up the night from now through the first of February in St. Joe’s Lake Bluff Park. From the colorful lighting of the Maids of the Mist Fountain to the 35-foot tall community Christmas tree, it is truly an impressive display and well worth taking the family down to check out if you haven’t already headed that direction. Don’t forget that all through the downtown, 15 festive snow-people will greet you from the winter public art project of several years ago. St. Joe is working hard to be a true destination attraction all through the year, and tens of thousands of people are enjoying the efforts with every passing year. Just a quick reminder that today, Saturday, December 5th, is the day of the annual Reindog ParadeThrough downtown St. Joe, so be there for that at noon straight up!

The city’s John & Dede Howard Ice Arena opened right on schedule over the Thanksgiving holiday, as well, and they are providing public skating at some time during the day 7-days a week. In fact, they are also offering a Two-for-One Lunch Hour Skate deal, and a Frequent Visitor Punch Card with 10-visits for just $35.00. You can learn more at www.sjcity.com. The arena is located at 2414 Willa Drive, along Napier Avenue in Southtown.

As the last of the boats are reluctantly pulled from local boat slips headed into winter dry docks, Harbor Isle Resort and Marina has just launched a brand new, completely overhauled website at www.harborislemarina.com. It is very colorful and tells you everything you could possibly want to know about the popular marina, as well as offering you the chance to subscribe to their electronic newsletter at no charge. The site also tells you what’s new coming into the new year. Incidentally, boating season is now less than 125 days away, according to Izzy at Harbor Isle. (Not that she’s counting, or anything!)

Visitors to the St. Joseph Luminary Festival who took the time to step inside DK Boutique on State Street in downtown St. Joseph were among the very first to see Deb’s major new addition of her Pandora’s Box jewelry center. DK has been carrying the Pandora brand for some time, but now they are truly a major league provider of the colorful concept. Pandora’s Box, just like the name implies, opens up countless opportunities for you to design your own jewelry out of handcrafted sterling silver and 14-karat gold with superior Danish design. Whether you use the Pandora beads to celebrate a moment, create a mood, or simply combine an array of beads to compliment a special occasion, you are the originator and creator of your own signature bracelet. DK Boutique is now a newly minted Pandora Boutique, making her a full service Pandora dealer offering the complete Pandora line. Check it out…it is a huge new addition to Deb Craig’s fine shop downtown.

If you are reading this on time, the folks at Round Barn Winery are inviting you to their Holiday Open House from 1pm until 4pm,Today, Saturday, December 5th. You can be among the first to taste their noveau wine from this year’s harvest, and pick up holiday gifts while the kids take glamour shots with good ole’ Santa. You’ll find them at 10983 Hills Road in Baroda.

Price-conscious consumers may find themselves delighted with Cathy Siemans’ new venture, Simply Irresistable, which recently opened for business in downtown St. Joe.

Cathy’s shop-within-a-shop is located inside Salon Devoir at 313 Main Street. She likes to call it fashion jewelry at irresistible prices, which is certainly true considering most of her work is priced at less than $30-dollars. The concept has been extremely well-received by shoppers who have discovered the new business.

Corrine Devoir is the owner of the salon, and she tells me that Cathy’s enterprise has been a great addition to her full-service salon and spa. You can reach both businesses at 429-2022. Best of luck, Cathy, and thanks for the very affordable options.

Renee Schoenwitz has thrown in the towel on her Contours Express full-service women’s gym. She tells me, with great sadness, that she will cease operations on December 23rd after two years in business, and will sell out everything in the gym to interested buyers.

That includes like-new cardio equipment including treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, and so on, as well as the weight machines. Also available are the beautiful reception desk, reception chairs and tables that could be used in any business setting, retail display furniture and upholstered stacking chairs. If you would like to preview the sale items, you can reach Renee at 429-7766 and schedule a time to take a look.

Having said all that, closing on a down note is not her style, so Renee would like you to know that they are a local drop-off point for the Doug-Out Food Bank throughout the holidays, and will gladly accept non-perishable food items for clients in Berrien County.

You’ll find the remaining days of Contours Express at 4066 Red Arrow Highway across from Walgreens.

My friends at Chemical Bank are encouraging you to help spread warmth this holiday season with their “Mittens for Michigan” campaign. All bank branches for Chemical Bank are now collecting new and gently usedMittens, gloves, hats and scarves for needy Michigan families. Last year they were successful in collecting more than 10,000 donations, and they are working again this year with United Way and other charitable organizations to distribute the donations periodically throughout the campaign. Collection boxes can be found in all 129 full-service banking offices in 31 counties throughout the Lower Peninsula.

For a list, click on their website at www.chemicalbankmi.com. It’s a great way for a small gesture to help your fellow citizens in need.

The cast and crew at The St. Joseph- Lincoln Senior Center are gearing up for their Annual Cookie Walk and Christmas Bazaar.

That event takes place at the center at 3271 Lincoln Avenue on December 12th from 9am until 1pm. Check it out!

That’s it for this week. Please remember to shop local and we’ll see you at the Reindog Parade today!

Pat Moody Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce pmoody@cstonealliance.org 269-925-6100 ext. 216
