New Buffalo’s US 12 Speed & Custom shop is hauling in trophies, copping the top honors, and basking in the auto show spotlight from Detroit to Chicago and beyond thanks to their amazing transformation of a 1969 Pro Street Z28 Camaro , literally a Phoenix rising from the ashes and taking people’s breath away. Speed shop owner Rocky Troxell and his team of Billy D, Madd Max, Brett Miller and Mark have spent two years rebuilding the Camaro known as “She 28” literally from the ground up after the vehicle had been severely damaged in a barn fire. The striking rebuild is owned by Kathy & Don Hoover of Hobart, Indiana , and it is turning heads at every stop on the circuit. Unveiled to the public just last month for the first time following the major-league makeover, “She 28” debuted at the 2016 Detroit Autorama . There it took 1st Place honors in the “Pro Street Custom” category as well as “Outstanding Display.” Additionally, the resur-rected Camaro was nominated as a contender for the 2016 “Ridler Award” --arguably the most elite award in all of automotive custom building circles. Earlier this month, the Z28 took a bow at the Chicago World of Wheels auto show and grabbed the 1st Place trophy for “Outstanding Street Machine,” as well as a Top 20 nomination for the 2016 “Legend Cup.” Even Hot Rod Magazine produced a feature on “She 28,” after word got out about the remarkable transformation provided by US 12 Speed & Custom. The shop is barely five years old this year, having been founded by Troxell in 2011 and is anchored in Harbor Country at 19015 US Highway 12 south of New Buffalo. The rebuild of the striking Camaro included a full chassis, body modifications, a new high-performance drive train, full interior and a sparkling new paint job. While this isn’t the first nominated build to emerge from Troxell’s team at US 12 Speed & Custom, it is nota-ble in that it is the very first to be painted in the shop’s brand new, state-of-the-art paint booth. That booth is the first of its kind anywhere in the Harbor Country area, and is capable of being compatible with Waterborne paints which are eco-friendly and offer a decidedly more vibrant color scale. US 12 Speed & Custom specializes in race-car fabrication, custom car work and classic car repairs. The shop is open week days from 8am until 5pm and can be reached by phone at 269-231-5234. When Judi Benninghoff launched her life’s passion, she was schlepping stuff all over the region. The colorful owner and operator of The Candlestick Maker in downtown St. Joseph worked the region-al craft show circuit for nearly a dozen years. From the Blueberry Festival in South Haven to Amish Acres ...from the Ship-n-Shore Festival in New Buffalo to the Apple Fest in Niles she would pack and unpack, sit, smile and sell her wares. Facing five-hour set-ups and tear-downs in addition to showtime itself just became way more than Judi wanted to do after 11 years in the trade. When Judi Benninghoff launched her life’s passion, she was schlepping stuff all over the region. The colorful owner and operator of The Candlestick Maker in downtown St. Joseph worked the regional craft show circuit for nearly a dozen years. From the Blueberry Festival in South Haven to Amish Acres...from the Ship-n-Shore Festival in New Buffalo to the Apple Fest in Niles she would pack and unpack, sit, smile and sell her wares. Facing five-hour set-ups and tear-downs in addition to showtime itself just became way more than Judi wanted to do after 11 years in the trade. She settled in with a permanent slot at the American Countryside Farmer’s Market in Elkhart, Indiana, but three years later the whole market shut down, leaving her in search of her next option. Judi finally decided perhaps it was time to find a brick and mortar home for her business. She tells me that St. Joseph was far and away the best choice with a great location and “far more year round potential than New Buffalo or South Haven.” Additionally, her son, Ed Bennett, was already living in St. Joseph and since he actively participates in her marketing and accounting as well as running the store weeknights and Saturdays, it was logical to set up in St. Joe. Besides, Ed also is a prime vendor of unique crafts and lighthouse photos for the business. The Candlestick Maker celebrates five years in business this spring, having established the shop at 408 State Street in downtown St. Joseph on April 6, 2011. Judi tells me that the business has grown steadily, with each passing year and 2015 was the best year yet. Additionally, 2016 has begun with a record pace, with January and February the busiest of those two months ever on record. Judi, who calls herself the Chief Fragrance Officer, pegs the success of her business to the huge variety of products appealing to both visitors and local gift seekers alike. Plus, the famous Lolli, the house-dog is a friendly greeter in a very dog-friendly community. Judi says her diligence to maintaining steady, predictable, hours seven days a week all year long help people who work but still want to find time to shop with them. The Candlestick Maker features handmade items from 17 local artists including beach glass, beaded and paper-beaded jewelry, homemade rugs, and ceramic decorative gifts. Other items in the house include clocks, coasters, trivets, picture frames made of local beach glass and stones, hand-made greeting cards, water colors & prints, paper quilling, lighthouse photos and canvases, hand-made soaps and lotions, and nautical home decor. The shop also offers the largest selection of room fragrance products in the area. The shop will celebrate it’s 5th Anniversary today, Saturday, April 2, 2016 from noon to 6pm with refreshments offered and everything in the store priced at 15-percent off. The shop is currently open from 10am until 7pm seven days a week right alongside the popular Buck Burgers & Brew.
