If there’s something you needed to get done before the end of the year, you have the balance of the day to accomplish that task and then you are flat out of time! Nevertheless, we crank up a whole new cal-endar tomorrow…and get back into full swing for the arrival of 2011. May it be a truly prosperous and rewarding year for you and your family…your business…your friends and colleagues everywhere across Michigan’s Great Southwest. In the coming year, we are bound to enjoy some exciting times, the occasional disappointment, and with any luck at all some great surprises for the business commu-nity. We already know that when spring rolls around the brand new Meijer of Stevensville will be opening their doors to customers. For those of you who have plac-ing your bets that the arrival of the new store will mean the immediate demise of Meijer of Benton Harbor , you can go ahead and toss your chips to the wind now. The rumor mill has churned for months that once the new store opened, the old one would be shuttered for good. Not only is that blatantly untrue, gamblers who had money riding on it will lose in a major way. I talked on Christmas Eve with folks who hold the blueprints for a substantive makeover of the Benton Harbor Meijer beginning this coming week. A huge portion of the massive parking lot was upgraded late this fall, as company officials elected to take advantage of the mild weath-er and get the project launched. This week, the work moves indoors where a multi-mil-lion dollar remodeling job will result in a number of changes. One major element is the relocation of the store’s burgeoning pharmacy department which will be moved to the front of the store to accommodate addi-tion of a drive-up window. The store’s pop-ular jewelry department will move to the cen-ter of the store, and other departments will get dramatic upgrades as well. In essence, the interior of the store will be brought up to the advanced standards of flagship stores such as those in South Bend and Kalamazoo…and quite similar to the inside layout of the new Stevensville store Continued on page 9 FREE SIMPLE FEDERAL TAX RETURN. Pat Moody

Happy New Year, everyone! If there’s something you needed to get done before the end of the year, you have the balance of the day to accomplish that task and then you are flat out of time! Nevertheless, we crank up a whole new calendar tomorrow…and get back into full swing for the arrival of 2011. We already know that when spring rolls around the brand new Meijer of Stevensville will be opening their doors to customers. For those of you who have placing your bets that the arrival of the new store will mean the immediate demise of Meijer of Benton Harbor, you can go ahead and toss your chips to the wind now. The rumor mill has churned for months that once the new store opened, the old one would be shuttered for good. Not only is that blatantly untrue, gamblers who had money riding on it will lose in a major way. One major element is the relocation of the store’s burgeoning pharmacy department which will be moved to the front of the store to accommodate addition of a drive-up window. The entire plan solidifies Meijer’s dedication to the Benton Harbor community and surrounding municipalities which have come to rely on the popular store’s broad array of services and amenities. Stay tuned for great things in the weeks and months ahead, Meijer shoppers!

Work has been underway on the rehabilitation of the former Sherwin-Williams Paint Store on Napier Avenue in Benton Charter Township for a couple of months now. In recent days a new awning has been erected on that building announcing the impending arrival of Premier Home Furnishings. If that name sounds familiar to you, it’s because Jim Forker has had a presence in the market for several years now in the former K-Mart Shopping Center a few short blocks away, but is relocating the store to the Napier Avenue site. Company employees told me last week that original plans would have had them already in the new store by now, but things got delayed from time to time, and the shop is now scheduled to open sometime around mid-January. Premier is a rental-purchase enterprise that has enjoyed success for about five years now offering not only furniture, but also appliances, computers and home electronics. The new location is at 1091 E. Napier Avenue across the street from Chase Bank. Stay tuned.

Across the street from the front parking lot of Premier’s current store, there’s a new name for the Twin Cities Inn and Suites. The motor lodge is under new management and will now fly the flag of Days Inn & Suites along Mall Drive. That’s the property across from Staples and next to the Courtyard by Marriott. Congratulations on your new franchise affiliation locally.

As work progresses rapidly on the removal of the last vestiges of the former Sears building in downtown Benton Harbor, making way for the $65-million dollar Whirlpool campus, relocation has already taken place for the Berrien County Chapter of the American Red Cross, which was on the periphery of the site. The nonprofit agency has found new quarters in the former Weichert Real Estate building on Niles Road. The bright yellow sign recently changed to the world-renowned red, black and white logo at 3838 Niles Road in St. Joseph. The phone number of the local agency remains unchanged at 927-2288. For many years the chapter conducted various classes at its home in the 300 block of Riverview Drive in Benton Harbor. That property was recently acquired as part of the redevelopment of the area for the Whirlpool project. The chapter’s classes at the new site next to The Rental Branch will resume next month according to Red Cross officials, and their website at www.berrienredcross.org.

A Paw Paw man who already owns business operations in five other communities across the region has turned on the pumps and opened the doors onto a new gasoline service station and convenience store in downtown Benton Harbor. Amrit Singh successfully completed a substantial reconstruction of the former downtown Phillips 66 Service Station at the corner of 4th and Main across from Dial-a-Ride and opened for business earlier this month. The new Marathon station and c-store is a 24-hour a day operation with not only gas pumps but snack foods, a few of the household staples and a Boost Mobile Phone Center. Singh reports that he plans to add some hot food take-out options in the coming weeks, and his shop is also a center for utility bill payments among other services. An on-site ATM is also available at the store, which is similar to operations that Singh operates in Kalamazoo, Sister Lakes, Paw Paw, Sturgis and Lawrence.

Downtown Stevensville is getting ready to welcome the arrival of Simply Chic, just in time for the 2011 prom season. Owner and operator Mary Hendrix tells me that the new shop which will be selling new prom, pageant and bridal gowns and offering rental tuxedos is gearing up for a Grand Opening on February 12th from 10am until 4pm. Simply Chic will be located at 5806 St. Joseph Avenue in the village, and will be accepting special dress consignments every Saturday beginning next Saturday, January 8th from 10am until 4pm. You are invited to take in your current, clean, like-new formal wear from your closet to earn some cash. In addition to the apparel opportunities, Mary’s friend Samantha Kelm and her team from Simply Unforgettable Occasions will offer bridal consultancy service on the lower level of Simply Chic. They offer a host of services from décor set-up to full-service planning for brides. Chic will be open Monday through Friday from 3 until 7pm and Saturdays from 10 until 4. Unforgettable will be open during store hours and after hours by appointment. You can reach Mary at 930-0046 or Samantha at 487-1652. Congratulations, ladies, and best of luck with your new venture.

Coming soon to the city of Hartford: Transylvania Wolves. Not the animals, but the restaurant bearing that name. The city recently voted to support the liquor license application of Mike and Irena Popp of Hartford who are native to the Transylvania region of Romania. The restaurant is expected to open sometime in February offering largely American cuisine. Based on the couple’s heritage, you can also expect to find Hungarian fare such as goulash and Romanian delicacies such as lamb and stuffed cabbage once the diner gets up and running.

If you run into Jack Gibson, give him a high-five on his first anniversary in business at Nutrition Now in Southtown St. Joseph. Jack says his crew is very appreciative of the tremendous support they have recieved, and wants you to know that they will be launching a new round of weight loss challenges. Based on early data, he’s expecting this round to be the biggest and best ever, with 10-week classes getting underway this first week of January. Multiple class times are available, and many entry fees get paid back in cash and prizes. Kara has class details at 861-1342, or stop by Nutrition Now next to Papa Vino’s on Hilltop in St. Joseph Charter Township. Happy Anniversary, Jack!

Don’t use up all your party power tonight, because our friends at the D.A.N.K. in Benton Harbor are looking forward to entertaining you in a big way next Saturday night, January 8th as they celebrate the birthday of Elvis Presley! Pull your blue suede shoes out of the closet and get ready to party with some great music, Elvis impersonations, singing, and naturally some great food and drink specials. You might even earn a prize for the best-dressed Elvis look-a-like. Karaoke with Mike & Katie…Echoes of Elvis & Patsy with doors opening at 6pm and music from 7 until 11 at the D.A.N.K. Hall at 2651 Pipestone Road in Benton Harbor. Admission is just $6-bucks a head, and food and beverages will be available for additional cost. You can reserve your spot at 926-6652, but walk-ins are welcome, as well.

My friend Anna Russo-Sieber spent a good part of her pre-Christmas holiday planning for the New Year with an aggressive schedule of art classes this winter at The Anna Russo-Sieber Gallery at 147 Fifth Street across from The Ideal Place Restaurant. How’s this for a line-up? Wine Education, Italian & Spanish Languages, Painting, Mixed Media, Interior Redesign, The Art of Entertaining, Jewelry, Drawing, Cultural Arts and much more! A stable of highly-qualified and talented instructors will join you to offer high quality education in a truly fun and eclectic setting in the heart of the Benton Harbor Arts District. The ARS Gallery is located in the Candy Lofts Building, which is bringing new life to the art of residency in the district as well. Check Anna’s website for fun stuff like: Cabernet & Canvas Workshop, Mosaic for Grown-Ups, Wine Around the World and Water Color Media. A whole host of kid’s classes are also on the docket, so log onto www.annarussoart.com for information and registration and payment opportunities. Classes will begin in a few short weeks, so don’t wait until it’s either too late, or the classes have filled up without you. You can reach Anna by phone at 269-208-4409. Winter time is fun time at ARS Gallery in Benton Harbor.

In another art venue, my friends at The Box Factory for the Arts will welcome the Riversong Music Society’s 2nd Annual Young Talent Showcase next Saturday, January 8th. The show will feature Sarah Dowell, the Attilla Trio, and the Teen Ensemble of the All God’s Children Community Choir. Showtime is 8pm, and tickets are just $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, and free for children 12 and under when accompanied by an adult.

That’s it for this week, kids. Happy New Year…please plan responsibly, party responsibly, and take along a designated driver! See you next year, right here in MailMax!
