Moody

Cassava Latin American Cuisine has briefly disappeared from the scene in downtown St. Joseph, but they will soon be back larger than life, sporting a new name, and with it a dramatically expanded menu in a new location in Benton Charter Township. The popular restaurant on the second floor of the former St. Joseph Elks building downtown wrapped up their stay overlooking State Street earlier this week, but will re-enter the dining scene in the middle of March as Cravings Bistro & Pub in the space that was formerly home to The Hacienda and Isabella’s. While Chef Eduardo and his crew will retain some of their favorite Latin dishes, they will be adding much more to their menu selections with items such as steaks, perch, swordfish, grilled Thai shrimp, cheeseburger sliders, ball park pretzels, scallops, five different kinds of wings, varieties of pastas (including different styles of Mac-and cheese), a Michigan cheese board with olives and meats, many different types of burgers, sandwiches and more. Under the slogan, “Your satisfaction is our passion,” the new Cravings Bistro & Pub will feature a Chef’s Corner in the dining area along with their brick fire place. There, plans are to feature Chef Eduardo at least once a week with a special food feature pairing it with wines or beers from the region. A smaller bar area in the Chef’s Corner will feature beer and wine tastings. The great bar will feature a glass waterfall and 20 mostly local craft beers on tap. The shop is located right next to AMF Blossom Lanes on M-139.

Downtown St. Joe merchants looking ahead to the coming spring season have a great new partner for their spring fix up plans in the form of Edgewater Bank. The bank’s president Rick Dyer tells me that they have launched a special Downtown Improvement Loan Program targeted at merchants who would like to improve the exterior or interior of their business. The very low fixed rate interest program is designed to help merchants thinking of adding an awning, a new sign, or perhaps re-painting the building or the trim. On the inside, merchants looking to freshen up their décor with fresh paint, re-finished flooring, or updated displays and shelving can find assistance for loans up to $35,000.00 for Up to 5 years at the fixed rate of 3.25%. You can learn more online at www.edgewaterbank.com or by calling 269-982-4175. The program has been endorsed by St. Joseph Today.

Speaking of St. Joseph Today, they will play host to the 8th Annual Magical Ice Carving Festival this coming weekend, February 10th through the 12th throughout the central business district. Competitive ice carving among professional teams will take place on Saturday from 10am until 3pm at various carving stations along State Street. Individual competition returns on Sunday along Pleasant Street from 10am until 2pm. The Schu’s Festival Tent on Pleasant Street will complete the stage for those seeking a warm up from the outdoor activities and will be available all weekend beginning late Friday afternoon. You can find the entire slate of events for the big show online at St. Joe Today’s website, www.sjtoday.org or stop by the organization’s Welcome Center at 421 State Street.

With tighter budgets all the time, you can help out your local library by donating nice clean books to the Friends of the Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library in St. Joseph over the next couple of weeks. Their annual book sale is coming up in April, but sorting is a critical part of that process, and they are finding themselves a bit thin on donations thus far. The Friends team is a critical supplement to increasingly smaller budgets annually, and with critical repairs such as a new roof and fire alarm upgrades, it doesn’t get any easier. Please consider sorting through your personal libraries at home for clean, current books that can sell well in the April sale. Simply dropping them off at the library will be deeply appreciated, according to Friends president Patricia Hall. Thanks for your consideration.

Another group of “friends,” in this case the Friends of St. Joe Dog Park will hold an organizational meeting at the St. Joe Library next Monday, February 6th, at 6pm to help identify concerns and suggestions for improving the city’s dog park. You can meet other park users and help formulate a volunteer corps to work with the city parks department for updates.

Future authors interested in critical learning are invited to a Writing Class at Tabula Rasa Gallery in downtown Baroda today, Saturday, February 4th, from noon until 2pm. There is a $10 walk-in fee, and writing prompts, reference materials and beverages will be provided.

Meanwhile, future playwrights have a workshop coming their way at The Box Factory for the Arts at 1101 Broad Street in St. Joe on February 18th and 19th led by Mary Lou Britton of the Community Theater Association of Michigan. Learn more about The Box Factory at www.boxfactoryforthearts.org.

Future musicians eager to audition for the Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra’s Spring Term have the opportunity on February 13th at the Upton Middle School. Details can be found online at www.smso.org.

Future artists of all ages interested in a variety of methods should look to The Krasl Art Center for winter classes getting underway as early as later this week. From ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, painting and beyond to specialty workshops, there’s a class for practically everybody. Check out the winter class schedule online at www.krasl.org.

Next Sunday, February 12th, the Twin Cities Organ Concert Series presents Gloriana: Five Centuries of English Choral and Organ Music at the Church of the Mediator at 14280 Red Arrow Highway in Harbert. A $5.00 donation is suggested for the 4pm concert and you can learn more online at www.tcorganconcerts.org.

Tonight you can find great music as the Women with Heart Rock The Livery in the Benton Harbor Arts District. Showtime, here on February 4th, is 8pm at 190 5th Street in Benton Harbor with five outstanding women including recording artists Bonita Mitchell, Venetia Sekema, Karine, Char Jones, and Dawn Yarbrough. The event, under the direction of Laurie Pagogna will benefit the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign and the Benton Harbor Girls Academy. General admission is $10 and the band is comprised of Marcus Robinson, Johnnie Edwards, Will Jones and Brandon Chase.

Monday morning, February 6th, from 9 until 11am, the St. Joseph MOMS Club will host their 3rd Annual Preschool Fair at the 1st Congregational Church at 2001 Niles Avenue in St. Joe. It’s a veritable one-stop shop for parents providing in-depth access to the wonderful selection of St. Joseph and Stevensville area schools. Public, parochial, independent, and nursery school options will all be represented along with information regarding parent resource programs sponsored by United Way. The fair is open to both club members and the general public alike, and it is free for everyone. Check it out!

That’s pretty much it for this week, kids. Have a great weekend, continue to shop for your Valentine’s gifts locally, and we’ll see you again next Saturday, right here in MailMax!

Pat Moody

Executive Vice President of Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce
pmoody@cstonealliance.org 269-925-6100 ext. 216
